Market Match Spending on the Rise

Market Match is an incentive and bonus program offered to Calfresh food MM Spending Dec 15 to July 16stamp recipients and it is the best way to make CalFresh dollars go further at the farmers’ market. When someone spends their CalFresh benefits at participating farmers’ markets, they receive extra Market Match funds in the form of vouchers to spend on fresh produce and nuts. Since December 2015, Alchemist has seen steady growth in Market Match spending at our farmers’ markets.

As we move through the heart of the harvest season we look forward to seeing these numbers continue to climb! Check out our Market Match page under the Projects tab for more information and visit fmfinder.org for an interactive map of farmers’ markets currently offering Market Match.

CalFresh households benefit from EBT at local farmers markets

From 2009 to 2014, government assistance known nationally as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) redemptions at farmers markets have grown by 350 percent. Locally, it is estimated that up to 200,000 CalFresh-eligible households in Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, and Nevada Counties may benefit from this work!
Thanks to a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Alchemist CDC, the Health Education Council, and Public Health Institute Center for Wellness & Nutrition have partnered to enable regional farmers markets to accept CalFresh EBT benefits in order to increase low-income families’ access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The work locally is part of a USDA-wide effort to strengthen local and regional food systems and increase access to fruits and vegetables.
